A temporary marketplace is identified to allow vendors selling basic necessities and prime comodiites a place to continue to sell their goods. Transport is available to help move the goods and workers will be hired through the cash for work program to assist in setting up tables and tents for the temporary marketplace.

Detail of action

This action will have multiple benefits in combating malnutrition amongst the school going children, reducing the number of hunger-induced school dropouts, and other social ills like early child marriages and child labour. School feeding will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and will only target primary schools in the target wards. The plan is to target all the 20 primary schools in the target wards to ensure all children from food insecure households in the target wards are included. The school feeding daily rations will be guided by the UNICEF and WFP guidelines on school feeding to ensure that the recommended nutritional requirements are met.

Inputs to be considered include short-duration and/or drought tolerant seeds, fertilizer, farming tools, or materials for vegetable cultivation.

Distribution of drought-adapted seeds (millet: local farmers' produced seeds) and improved short-cycle seeds (cowpea: seeds from agronomic research)

Detail of action

Households targeted by this action have the potential of salvaging some harvest even during drought years thereby ensuring some level of food security. It was noted that one of the reasons why the yields are very low in small- scale agriculture is that communities use uncertified and holdover seeds that are susceptible to pests and diseases. Distributing certified seeds will boost the yield potential of the targeted households. The target for this action is 2,000 vulnerable households, who will each receive 5kg of millet (approx. 1Ha) and 2.5kg of cowpeas approx. 0.17Ha). The seed varieties

Veterinary care/Vaccination to address disease/parasite burden during/after the shock. This is due to animals being less resilient during the period and also to prevent loss of livestock from the impacts of the floods

Livestock play a pivotal role in the livelihoods of most communities, acting as a store of wealth. Improving livestock conditions through vaccination and dipping ahead of a forecasted drought will decrease the vulnerability of animals, stressed by drought conditions, from developing and succumbing to bacterial and parasitic infections.

Clothing is distributed to protect alpaca herders, children under 5, the elderly, and the chronically or acutely ill from the cold, including coats, gloves, stockings, boots.

Ensure that families at risk maintain access to safe water before and during the event, anticipatory actions such as the generation of water for consumption through water purification plants belonging to the National Society, and the expertise of specialized teams in water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, and supplies for water purification.
The NS's water treatment plants are mobilized as needed. Specialized equipment arriving in the field in advance includes water equipment.
