Hazards covered by anticipation
Drought
Drought and floods are the most frequent hazards in Malawi, posing a threat to the country’s agriculture, which is mostly rain-fed agriculture. For example, recurring drought leads to the loss of crops and livestock, exacerbating people’s food insecurity. Malawi also suffers from cyclones, diseases outbreaks, extreme heat, landslides, pest infestations and wildfires. Environmental degradation and climate change are exacerbating the frequency and severity of many of these.
Malawi has several frameworks in place to anticipate some of these hazards, with practitioners in the country developing considerable experience and expertise in implementing this approach. It has also held national-level dialogue platforms to strengthen this approach.
