Regional Anticipatory Action Working Group

Overview

The Regional Anticipatory Action Working Group (RAAWG) is a regional platform that brings together governments and diverse stakeholders to advance anticipatory action across southern Africa. It is led and coordinated by the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

As a government and stakeholder space for anticipatory action, the RAAWG provides a forum for:

• sharing experiences and lessons learnt
• co-developing policies and frameworks
• designing and implementing projects jointly
• exchanging information to strengthen coordination and continuous improvement
• facilitating collaboration across regional units, Member States and humanitarian partners.

The RAAWG works in close alignment with national anticipatory action working groups, which are government-led structures at the country level. This ensures coherence between regional priorities and national implementation.

The RAAWG Secretariat, comprising FAO, the IFRC and WFP, acts as a facilitator, enabler and broker for the group. Its role is to support the effective functioning of the RAAWG, while ensuring that all activities are carried out under the leadership and ownership of SADC.
