Kenya is exposed to a diverse range of hazards, with droughts and floods posing the greatest risk. Severe droughts occur once per decade, on average, with climate change likely to increase this. Riverine floods are a major threat to people’s lives and livelihoods, particularly along the Tana River and near Lake Victoria. Other hazards in Kenya include cyclones, earthquakes, epidemics, landslides and wildfires. Conflict compounds the impacts of these hazards in some parts of the country. 

Anticipatory action is becoming a well-established approach to help alleviate the humanitarian impacts of some hazards. The Kenyan government, with support from communities, non-governmental organizations and development partners, developed the Kenya Anticipatory Action Road Map (2024-2029), which will help ensure that people are better prepared before disasters strike.
