Hazards covered by anticipation

  • Cold wave / heavy snowfall
  • Cyclone / hurricane / tropical storm / typhoon
  • Flash flood
  • Flood
  • Heat wave
  • Landslide / mudslide
  • Multi-hazard
  • Riverine flood
  • Storm-induced flood

Bangladesh faces a high level of disaster risk, much of it driven by climate change. Among other hazards, it experiences frequent tropical cyclones and storm surges, drought, flash floods, heat waves, landslides, lightning strikes, riverbank erosion and seismic activity; cold waves are also a risk in certain regions.

Bangladesh was one of the first countries to pilot anticipatory action, back in 2015. Since then, the approach has gained huge interest among humanitarian organizations and non-governmental organizations, with frameworks now in place for several of these hazards. The government has also taken steps to institutionalize the approach, for example by including anticipatory action in the revised Standing Orders on Disaster 2019 and the National Plan for Disaster Management (2021-25).
