Hazards covered by anticipation

  • Dzud

One of the most persistent and damaging hazards in Mongolia is dzud: a summer drought followed by harsh winter conditions. The extreme conditions prevent animals from accessing pasture, leading to major livestock losses for herders. This hazard has been the focus of most anticipatory action initiatives in the country to date and several organizations, with government support, have taken steps to support herders.

Other winter hazards in include blizzards, flash floods and flooding caused by heavy precipitation or melting snow, are another risk.
