Mali is among the most at-risk countries globally for drought. This affects many people in the country, often leading to severe food insecurity, the loss of livestock and water scarcity. Flooding is another common hazard, especially along the Niger and Senegal rivers and their tributaries. Epidemics, locust invasions and strong winds can also affect the country. Since 2012, an ongoing conflict has caused further instability.
Anticipatory action is becoming well established as a way to reduce the impacts of many of these hazards. In 2025, the country held its 1st National Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action, which set out the way forward for practitioners in the country.
