Anticipatory action in Sri Lanka
People in Sri Lanka are at risk from 21 different types of hazard. Many parts of the country have high exposure to tsunamis, while epidemics, especially dengue, are a major threat. In the central Hill Country, floods and landslides are a risk. Other regions experience drought, floods and cyclones.
In recent years, many practitioners and organizations have made progress with embedding anticipatory action within their work, and frameworks are now in place to anticipate several hazards. Anticipatory action is also being steadily institutionalized in Sri Lanka. The first national dialogue platform was held in 2024, and work is under way to develop a comprehensive national framework for anticipatory action. This will include a roadmap and minimum technical standards, alongside a standardized approach for developing frameworks for different hazards.
