Hazards covered by anticipation
Saint Lucia faces several natural hazards. Hurricanes and tropical storms are the country’s most significant risks, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds, storm surges and landslides. Flash flooding and coastal erosion are also common, particularly in low-lying areas. In addition, droughts during prolonged dry periods can affect water supply, agriculture and food security, while climate change is increasing environmental vulnerabilities.
Anticipatory action in Saint Lucia is developing through efforts to improve disaster preparedness and early warning systems. The National Emergency Management Organisation coordinates disaster response and preparedness activities, including weather monitoring, public alerts, evacuation planning, and pre-positioning of relief supplies ahead of storms. Regional and international partners have also supported climate resilience and forecast-based preparedness initiatives.
