Kyrgyzstan

Located in the mountains of Central Asia, many people in Kyrgyzstan live in the foothills and valleys, where they are exposed to avalanches, floods, landslides and mudflows. Communities in remote mountain areas are particularly vulnerable, as they can easily be cut off from the country’s economic and healthcare centres. There is great seasonal variation in temperatures, with summer temperatures rising above 40°C and winter temperatures falling as low as -49°C at higher  altitudes. As a result, both cold waves and heat waves pose a risk at different times of the year. Due to its location along several seismic fault lines, Kyrgyzstan also experiences frequent earthquakes. 

Despite progress in reducing poverty, many people in Kyrgyzstan have limited capacity to cope with these varied hazards. Against this backdrop, there is great potential for anticipatory action to reduce people’s vulnerability by helping them to act ahead of forecastable hazards.
