BACKGROUND

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a large, mountainous country located in Western Asia. Although the climate is mainly arid and semiarid, it has dramatically diverse climate zones across the country. The rainy period in most of the country is from November to May followed by a dry period between May and October.

It has the second-largest economy in the Middle East and North Africa and currently hosts an estimated one million refugees, the sixth-largest refugee population in the world, mainly from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Environmental hazards include floods, wildfires, landslides, and storms. Iran is located in a seismically active area and is highly prone to earthquakes.
