El Salvador

Situated on a narrow stretch of land in Central America, El Salvador is often hit by large hurricanes and tropical storms. These routinely cause floods and landslides, while also disrupting the agricultural sector. Other hazards affecting the country include droughts, earthquakes and volcanic activity, while disease outbreaks and epidemics are further threats. People’s ability to cope with these shocks is limited by the social, economic and environmental problems that afflict the country. 

Anticipatory action offers a way to mitigate the impacts of many of these hazards, and El Salvador has made huge progress with advancing this approach in recent years. Many of these achievements have been led by the government, which is working to institutionalize this approach with the country’s disaster risk management infrastructure.
