WAHAFA partners provide cash and other anticipatory support ahead of drought in Somaliland
The National Disaster Preparedness and Food Reserve Authority (NADFOR) in Somaliland recently issued an appeal after seasonal forecasts and field data indicated worsening drought conditions. Based on this appeal, the Anticipatory Action Plan for Drought, developed under the Welthungerhilfe Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Facility (WAHAFA), was triggered.
This activation released 300,000 euros for the implementation of a series of anticipatory actions. These will alleviate the expected humanitarian impacts before the drought peaks; for example, reduced water availability is likely to place further pressure on agriculture, water systems and pastoral livelihoods, increasing the risk of food insecurity.
The actions are being led by CARE Deutschland e.V., CARE International in Somalia (CARESOM) and the Shaqodoon Organization, and will continue until April 2026. The actions include:
- multipurpose cash assistance for 1,360 vulnerable households (around 8,400 people)
- the assessment and rehabilitation of communal water points
- coordination among all relevant actors, including between NADFOR and disaster-risk-reduction committees
- dissemination of early warning messages to raise awareness of the drought’s expected impacts.
This is the second time the Anticipatory Action Plan for Drought has been activated, following a previous activation in June 2025.
"[We are] grateful for the timely activation of anticipatory actions for drought in Somaliland. Thanks to WAHAFA, CARE Deutschland e.V., CARESOM and Shaqodoon Organization for supporting early action to protect livelihoods, strengthen water systems and reduce humanitarian impacts before the drought peaks."
