The Rwandan Red Cross acts to protect communities ahead of forecast floods
The Rwandan Red Cross has activated its simplified early action protocol for floods after forecasts from Meteo Rwanda predicted rainfall of 85-105 mm in the coming days. It is now undertaking anticipatory actions in Nyabihu and Rubavu districts, Western Province, including:
- support to evacuate to safer areas
- sandbags for communities to protect their homes from the flood waters
- cash assistance to enable households to pay for shelter materials, maintain their livelihoods and evacuate
- hygiene promotion
- delivering water to evacuation centres
- sharing early warnings among at-risk communities.
Combined, these will reduce the humanitarian impacts of the floods for 4,000 people, with around 90,000 people expected to benefit more broadly (e.g., through early warnings).
The simplified EAP's agreed activation trigger is rainfall exceeding 90mm. Once the forecasts indicated this would be breached, the Rwandan Red Cross automatically received the pre-agreed budget for anticipatory actions from the Anticipatory Pillar of the IFRC's Disaster Response Emergency Fund; this is part of the total budget of 217,450 Swiss francs (around 264,000 US dollars/235,000 euros).
