Hazards covered by anticipation
Flood
Lebanon’s hot, dry summers can lead to heat waves, while persistent deforestation and other factors can drive wildfires in the north of the country. In winter, temperatures in mountainous areas often drop below freezing, and many parts of the country experience heavy snowfall and winter storms. Earthquakes are a risk, as are coastal floods, while flash floods can strike the northeast region. These hazards are amplified by other drivers of risk. Conflict regularly flares up in different regions, while the country’s fluctuating economic situation poses challenges to public health and exacerbates security concerns.
Anticipatory action has the potential to help mitigate the humanitarian impacts of many of these hazards, and many organizations are now working to establish frameworks for these.
