Lao People's Democratic Republic

Seasonal flooding, particularly during the monsoon period (May to October), is a recurring threat in Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Floods along the Mekong River and its tributaries regularly affect land, infrastructure and communities. Drought poses a challenge during the dry season (November to April), affecting water availability and food production. Climate change is expected to heighten the frequency and unpredictability of both drought and floods, increasing the risks for  vulnerable communities.  

With limited social safety nets, many communities struggle to cope with the impacts of these and other hazards. Anticipatory action is a way to increase their resilience and reduce the impacts. Several organizations in Lao People’s Democratic Republic have already established frameworks for different hazards, and in 2023 the country established a national technical working group to scale up these activities.
