Rigorous evidence on the effectiveness of anticipatory action is urgently needed to inform decision-making, scale up existing programs, and engage the donor community. Yet, obtaining this evidence is challenging for methodological, logistical, and ethical reasons. In this session, we introduce the current state of scientific knowledge on the effectiveness of anticipatory action and present methods for conducting rigorous impact evaluations. The conversation then shifts towards Mongolia, where we share the findings of a recent impact evaluation of anticipatory cash transfers during an extreme winter event. The program was jointly implemented by scientists and People in Need, with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office. Lastly, we discuss avenues for future impact evaluations. The session will be interactive, with opportunities for participants to share thoughts, insights, and feedback. Please bring your questions and join us for this Community Conversation.
