Linking Nepal’s Social Protection Programs with Anticipatory Action - briefing

All social protection programmes are shock responsive, as they deal with shocks that negatively affect families and/or individuals. However, most are designed to support households experiencing shocks because of life-cycle events, such as birth, old age or illness. Shock-responsive social protection instead focuses on disasters and crises, encompassing the adaptation of regular programmes and systems to cope with changes in needs and demands following a disaster.

The Nepal Red Cross Society has been exploring different ways of linking social protection programmes and anticipatory action. This includes exploring ways to target vulnerable groups for anticipatory action by utilizing social protection registries. This briefing summarizes the main outcomes from a workshop on linking Nepal’s social protection programmes with anticipatory action.
