The Yemen Red Crescent Society acts in anticipation of floods
Since the start of the second rainy season in 2025, which began in July, the Yemen Red Crescent Society, together with the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority and the Civil Defence in Sana’a, has been closely monitoring forecasts for increased rainfall in the country. When forecasts indicated high rainfall accumulation for 18 to 25 August 2025 for the Hajjah governorate, it activated its simplified early action protocol (EAP) for floods.
The Yemen Red Crescent Society is now implementing the pre-agreed actions outlined in this EAP, targeting 15,000 people at risk. The actions focus on two sites for internally displaced people (IDPs), Al-Mithaq and Mushta, in the Abs district of Hajjah governorate.
A total budget of 129,338 Swiss francs (160,379 US dollars / 137,951 euros), distributed through the Anticipatory Pillar of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund, is being used for these actions, which include:
- cleaning the drainage systems inside and surrounding the camps
- the provision of sandbags and other flood-mitigation measures for the affected communities and the IDP sites
- the distribution of emergency shelter and repair kits for households with extremely poor shelter
- multipurpose cash transfers
- equipping community committees with first aid kits and stretchers
- the distribution of early warning messages, as well as messages on shelter safety and hygiene.
To increase capabilities and improve the implementation of anticipatory actions in the future, a lessons learned workshop will be conducted after the completion of this activation.
