Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, will be the venue for the exchange of experiences facilitated by the 6th edition of the Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event, which takes place on 28 and 29 November 2024, will bring together around 280 representatives from the regional community of practice.
The dialogue platform will host participants with humanitarian, technical, scientific, governmental and community profiles, with a special emphasis on the stakeholders essential for boosting synergies that wil help to integrate anticipatory action into national systems and regional mechanisms for disaster risk management and emergency management.
The event is organized by the Anticipation Hub and co-organized by the Colombian Red Cross, the German Red Cross, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Start Network, and Global Support and Development. It is financially supported by the German Federal Foreign Office and the European Union.
The agenda includes plenary and creative sessions, as well as thematic discussions on the foundations and data for anticipatory action, financing and coordination mechanisms, social protection, community perspectives, and opportunities for knowledge generation, among others. The event will also highlight experiences and collaboration opportunities with regional organizations and technical advisory groups from Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
The 6th Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action in Latin America and the Caribbean will be broadcasted live on the YouTube channels of the Anticipation LAC, Cruz Roja Colombiana and UNOCHA Américas.
Below, some of the participants share their expectations for the event.
“This will be the fourth regional dialogue platform in which I've participated and I am very excited to think about how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown as a community of practice. For this year, I hope we can establish the necessary synergies to be better coordinated, without losing sight of the approaches of localization and inclusion in our anticipatory action initiatives.”
“Last year, at the Mitch+25 Forum and the Dialogue Platform in Central America, we declared 2024 the region's 'Anticipatory action year'. To achieve this, CEPREDENAC and the national systems of the region have, for the first time, integrated anticipatory action into the Regional Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Plan 2024-2030. To continue moving forward in this regard, we have initiated the development of the regional strategy to institutionalize anticipatory action in the region, in collaboration with the Technical Group on Anticipatory Action in Latin America and the Caribbean. I hope that the 6th Dialogue Platform will allow us to strengthen our work with national systems and consolidate the integration of anticipatory action into our regional strategies, together with the support of the humanitarian community.”
“The 6th Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action will bring inspiration for the work we are doing in the Advisory Group for Anticipatory Action in Colombia. Coordination between the different national partners is crucial to move towards increasingly complementary initiatives in the country. Especially given the challenges we have to innovate with anticipatory actions on social phenomena, such as displacement due to armed conflict, and epidemics.”
“This will be my first participation in a dialogue platform and I am pleased to know that we will be able to incorporate our partners - the non-governmental-organization sector, such as World Vision, Caritas, Trocaire and Fundación Plan, among others - by betting on localization in the conversations on anticipatory action in the region. I firmly believe that this will be a valuable opportunity to make contributions from our humanitarian work to efforts to be present with communities before the impacts of disasters occur.”
