Greece

With a hot Mediterranean climate, Greece faces recurring droughts, heat waves and wildfires. Heat waves have become increasingly frequent and severe, especially during the summer months (June to September). These pose serious health risks, particularly for elderly people, those with pre-existing health conditions, and outdoor workers. Urban areas are especially vulnerable due to the 'urban heat island' effect. Flash floods are another hazard, exacerbated by the country's mountainous terrain and wildfire-damaged landscapes, and by urban infrastructure that cannot absorb or channel water effectively.

Climate change is expected to increase both the frequency and intensity of these hazards. With limited coping capacities in high-risk communities, anticipatory action is essential to reduce the impacts and protect lives before extreme weather events occur.
