A Journey to Resilience - Cash for Anticipatory Action in Nigeria

Over the last six years, 43 million children have been internally displaced due to weatherrelated disasters, and 40 million children have their education disrupted annually because of climate change. Evidence shows that anticipatory action is crucial for mitigating the impacts of predictable shocks on children and communities. Emerging evidence also illustrates that cash and voucher assistance (CVA) in anticipatory action strengthens resilience and reduces the need for traditional humanitarian assistance.

This case study provides evidence-based learnings on the effectiveness of CVA in anticipation of the Nigeria flood season of 2024. Save the Children (SC) aimed to measure the effectiveness of anticipatory and shock-responsive cash on household and community resilience. The intervention focused on reducing household reliance on negative coping strategies and building resilience against climate shocks through early warning messaging and pre- and postshock cash transfers to at-risk households. Additionally, pre-shock Group Cash interventions were implemented to enhance community resilience through cash-for-work (CfW) activities.
