What is a trigger? 

Triggers are a key component to developing anticipatory action. They provide humanitarian and development decision-makers with the necessary information on who and what is likely to be impacted by future hazards and where and when early action should take place. Climate and weather forecasts that exceed danger levels and probability thresholds will lead to the launch of predefined early actions, and to trigger is to act in advance based on these warnings. The development of a trigger model is based on detailed risk analysis of relevant natural hazards, including impact assessments of past disaster events and analysis of key expsosure and vulnerability indicators. 

How can the trigger database be useful to you? 

Identifying and setting up triggers can be a very technical task, requiring cooperation among key actors and institutions, expert resources, and technical advise. This database will serve as an additional tool in the selection, development, and design of potential triggers for future early action plans. It collects information on triggers that have already been developed, such as the forecasts sources, lead times, risk indicators, stop mechanism, and return period, which can serve as points of comparison or inspiration for established practitioners and newcomers alike.
