Description

This session will be held as part of the Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks

Anticipatory action is an approach that has gained increasing relevance in the humanitarian sector as it enables humanitarian organizations to get ahead of a forecast hazard and reduce its predicted impact on people at-risk. Leveraging technological advancements in forecasting, anticipatory action utilizes this time window between a predicted hazard and its actual impact by systematically linking forecasts (or early warnings) to pre-defined action plans. The plans are activated on the basis of a forecast once a pre-defined threshold has been met. Anticipatory action has been pioneered by the humanitarian sector but is increasingly institutionalized as an approach in public disaster risk management.

This session explores the opportunities and challenges of mainstreaming anticipatory action into government systems. It highlights entry points and experiences to institutionalize anticipatory action approaches into government and how non-state actors can support this process. Participants will share experiences, discuss barriers, and identify future pathways to integrate and scale up anticipatory action within government systems.
